Writer's Journal: First Rehearsal

Saturday, July 25, 2015

In the summer this year, we had the first rehearsal of the dance sequence for HOPE.  With the July sunshine beating down outdoors, the whole HOPE team gathered together to talk about the production and see what Grace, the choreographer, had come up with!

First rehearsals are always nerve-wracking for everyone.  Often it’s the first time you’re meeting each other, sometimes they’re old friends.  We had a mixture of both!  But as soon as the film’s director, Phil, our AP, Alejandra, and our dancer and choreographer, Grace, came together, the conversation started flowing.  Film favourites were quickly established, and we were ready to go!

It was such a great experience for me as the screenwriter to see those Courier ink marks on the page be turned into a living breathing entity ready for capture on film.  In this instance, the entity being Grace!  To see the way she had interpreted the screen action, into beautifully choreographed, lyrical, fluid movements was really rewarding.  Her choreography tells the emotional story of the other characters in the short, in a way that is better than I could have hoped for.

Phil, the director, got some fantastic footage, with some equally beautiful camera movements to go with the dance.  It was great to see him experiment with different angles and shots.  It made me very excited for seeing the final version.  It really began to feel like the whole short was coming together.

Alejandra and I took photographs of the rehearsal in progress which are posted here on Alejandra’s marvellous website for the short film.

It was a very successful rehearsal.  I can’t wait for the next phase…
